The is no single correct way to examine your breasts, but we suggest a simple three-step process.

- Timing: many women find checking while in the shower is the best time, as it makes it easier to feel for lumps.
- Looking for skin puckering, rash, or liquid from the nipple: look while sitting, then leaning forward, then with your arms above your head.
- Feeling for lumps or skin changes: Feeling using a circular motion, beginning at the nipple and moving outwards to cover the whole breast. Lumps may be near the surface or deeper below. Remember to feel up into the armpit and around the collarbone.
The majority of patient with a breast lump will not have breast cancer.
Non-cancerous causes of a lump in the breast include:
- Fibroadenoma
- Cyst
- Fibrocystic change
- Lipoma
